elRTE is an open source and feature-rich WYSIWYG editor that is built using jQuery UI.
It performs all standard functions of an editor and has all the extras like undo-redo, advanced table management, creating a custom HTML element with a custom style + inserting it quickly and more.
The interface is controlled via a single CSS file and can be customized pretty easily.
It has a built-in "save" button which can be attached to a JS function that saves the content that is pretty useful for helping users not to lose their content.
elRTE can be integrated with any file manager, however, there is elFinder, a file manager that has ready-to-use integration (can be used standalone too).

Well done, but again another editor that doesn’t produce valid XHTML. And I would never give such a overblown editor to my clients to edit their sites. They would immediately mess it up…
Anyone knows if this could be integrated into Drupal, via a module perhaps?
Thank for this post, elRTE is much better than FCKEditor. I’m going to try it now!
@wfiedler then what would you use ?
@wfiedler elRTE can produce valid XHTML just make sure you have set correct DOCTYPE, in demo it uses HTML instead.
@x-style
CKEditor (http://ckeditor.com/), although it’s too overblown, but you can reduce the functions for clients to a minimum.
@troex
Sorry, this makes no sense for me. The output produces the editor, not the DOCTYPE of your site. Or do I miss something?
One thing more
@troex
for a simple break I just want and not . That’s all.
And the possibility to configure the editor functions.
As mentioned above, I don’t want my clients to play with fonts, colors, tables etc., because I define them in the CSS.
Sorry, you can’t type code in here. I mean the valid XHTML code for a break. Hope this makes sense.
Good job. Especially used file manager – elFinder. I will use it in my projects.
Elfinder + 100 !
elRTE + 90 !
Good job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fckeditor which is now ckeditor, has now been crippled by the removal of the file manager. if you want the file manager you have to pay for it!!! I think I will give elRTE a try…
If it can’t produce valid html you can always add Tidy which will produce valid code, you should never trust your clients and think they will do good with the tools you provide them, clients are good only messing the things up real bad… I think ill give this one a try though it looks quite dead on github.
OMG this is sooooooooooooo god
