	<img align="left" alt="Internet Connection Icon" height="128" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/connection-icon.jpg" style="margin-right: 5px;" width="128" />Web applications are offering an almost desktop-like functionality parallel to the increase in the connectivity speeds, wider usage of the cloud (easier scalability) &amp; improvements in JavaScript/RIA development.</p>
<p>
	Also, <strong>moving to the cloud is no more a fantasy</strong>, it is the &quot;current &amp; future trend&quot; considering the popularity of applications like Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat Online or web-based OSs.</p>
<p>
	As a web designer/developer, it is possible not to use any desktop softwares &amp; <strong>work 100% web-based</strong>.</p>
<p>
	There are several tools that we use daily &amp; has vital importance:</p>
<ul>
<li>
		IDE (code editor)</li>
<li>
		Image editor</li>
<li>
		Database manager</li>
<li>
		FTP application</li>
<li>
		Storage</li>
</ul>
<p>
	Although desktop environment, clearly, has many advantages over web, web has an important one like working from any computer (even it is a weak one) &amp; <strong>staying synchronized</strong>.</p>
<p>
	Here are <strong>free web applications</strong> that you can use to <strong>create your own web-based design/development environment</strong>:</p>
<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<h2>

<h2>
	Image Editing</h2>
<hr />
<p>
	Few weeks ago, a post at WRD was sharing <a href="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/online-image-editors-why-to-use-them-and-5-amazing-ones-for-designers/">5 amazing online image editors &amp; why to use them</a>. Let&#39;s remember them:</p>

<p>
	A very impressive application that looks &amp; functions so similar to Photoshop.</p>
<p>
	It has support for <strong>layers, filters</strong> &amp; provides some geometric shapes that you&#39;ll be surprised to see what can be created using them.</p>
<p>
	<strong>Some other great online image editors are:</strong></p>

<p>
	&nbsp;</p>
<h2>
	Storage</h2>
<hr />
<p>
	<strong>Storage is a little tricky</strong> as the services are either paid or limited free versions of the paid ones. However a limited free version is mostly enough to store data for multiple web design/development projects</p>
<h3>
	<a href="http://www.dropbox.com/" target="_blank">Dropbox</a></h3>
<p>
	<a href="http://www.dropbox.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="Dropbox" height="166" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/dropbox.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>

<p>
	<strong>ADrive</strong> offers a free version where <strong>files can only be reached via a web-based interface</strong> &amp; has a <strong>limit of 50gb</strong>.</p>
<h3>
	<a href="http://www.humyo.com/" target="_blank">humyo</a></h3>
<p>
	<a href="http://www.humyo.com/" target="_blank"><img alt="humyo backup" height="166" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/humyo.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>
<p>
	<strong>humyo</strong> offers an <strong>online storage space</strong> of 10gb for free which can be reached from only web.</p>
<p>
	<strong>There are many other services like:<br />
	</strong></p>

</ul>
<p>
	<strong>Do you use other web-based services/applications that ease your daily web design/developments tasks? <br />
	</strong></p>
<p>
	<strong>And, do you think it is efficient for a web designer/developer to work 100&amp; web-based? <br />

<p>
	An application hosted in the cloud will:</p>
<ul>
<li>easily scale (with instantly deployable &amp; API&nbsp;controlled instances, unlimited diskspaces, etc..)</li>
<li>serve files faster with content delivery network (CDN) support</li>
<li>have a better availability (with strong SLAs)</li>
</ul>
<p>With the increasing number of providers &amp; tools created, <strong>cloud hosting</strong> is getting simpler &amp; simpler everyday.</p>
<p>Getting in the cloud, in most cases, will save so much time &amp; resources when running a growing web application. You won&#39;t need to think of the hardware, better react to the system resources &amp; bandwidth usage fluctuations, pay exactly for what you use &amp; much more.</p>
<p>Here is a collection of <strong>popular options &amp; tools</strong> that can help you in <strong>hosting your applications in the cloud</strong>:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Cloud Hosting &amp; Storage Options</h2>
<hr />
<h3>Rackspace Cloud</h3>
<p><a href="http://affiliates.rackspacecloud.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=338&amp;url=13" target="_blank"><strong>Cloud Servers</strong></a> &#8211; (hosting)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mosso.com/cloudservers.jsp" target="_blank"><img alt="Mosso Cloud Servers" height="88" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/mosso-cloud-servers.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>
<p>The service provides instantly deployable servers with a choice of popular Linux distributions (no Windows). Currently, there is no API&nbsp;support but it is on the way.</p>
<p><a href="http://affiliates.rackspacecloud.com/idevaffiliate.php?id=338&amp;url=14" target="_blank"><strong>Cloud Files</strong></a> &#8211; (storage)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mosso.com/cloudfiles.jsp" target="_blank"><img alt="Mosso Cloud Files" height="88" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/mosso-cloud-files.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>
<p>A redundant data storage service which replicates the data in 3 seperate locations.</p>
<p>Files can be managed from a <strong>web-based interface or an API.</strong> The system is integrated with <a href="http://www.limelightnetworks.com/" target="_blank">LimeLight</a> content delivery network &amp; files can be selected to be served faster via this network.</p>
<h3>Amazon Web Services (AWS)</h3>
<p><a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/" target="_blank"><strong>Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)</strong></a> &#8211; (hosting)</p>
<p><a href="http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/" target="_blank"><img alt="Amazon EC2" height="88" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/amazon-ec2.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>
<p><strong>Amazon EC2</strong> is a web service that provides you the environment to instantly launch (or remove) new servers (instances) with the OS &amp; configuration you need which makes scaling of a web application much easier.</p>
<p>This functionality can be controlled via the web service APIs or tools to be mentioned in this post.</p>
<p>You are charged with the resources consumed like hours your servers (instances) work or the bandwidth used.</p>
<p><span id="more-876"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://aws.amazon.com/s3/" target="_blank"><strong>Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3)</strong></a> (storage)</p>
<p><a href="http://aws.amazon.com/s3/" target="_blank"><img alt="Amazon S3" height="88" src="http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/amazon-s3.jpg" width="480" /></a></p>
