Nice collection,

Just to clear up the misunderstanding between Asian and Oriental style. Oriental style is commonly symbolized through an emphasis on classical and mystical symbolism which became trendy at various stages in western culture. Most notably in europe during the late 1800s due to various forms of exchange in trade, art and information with East Asian countries (especially in France following the expo in Paris). Through these exchanges the west began to develop a generalised and ficticious imagination of Asian culture as 'the orient'. The dominant stylistic themes of the Orient drawing on themes of graceful, feminine, fairytale, minimalist and dreamlike forms. Note various differences exist in stylistic form between Middle Eastern Arabesque Orientalism and East Asian (far east) Orientalism.

I am not as familiar with the notion of an 'Asian style' as it has multiple meaning depending on where you look. To focus on just design I guess the main differences are that; unlike the Orientalist style, the Asian style has modern roots and is still being created today, whereas the main themes of the Oriental style existed over 100 years ago. Asian style usually combines modern Asian cosmopolitan design alongside natural settings. Design as part of nature; strongly evident within the design of Asian restaurants mixing simple elements from nature alongside modern stylings. To this extent people from Asian countries often represent themselves in restaurants through this identity however Orientalism was an identity/image imposed on Asians but created by Europeans.

Thank you for this list. What I would love to find are Web 2.0 style Asian icons. Does anyone have an idea where I could find them?
