We use the jStars jQuery plugin for our stars, but no matter which one you use, if you store your rating in the database as 0 (for none) and then 1 to 100, always, you can adjust your scale to support half stars, quarter stars, 4 stars, 5 stars, 20 stars, whatever you like. And if you change the stars style later, you never have to recalculate the rating. Using 5 stars, you value at 20 each. 5 stars, with half stars, is 10 for each half and so on.
