MODx is a powerful open source CMS that is built with PHP & uses MySQL for storing the data.
It focuses on offering zero restrictions while creating a website & has a flexible template engine + a robust API for creating anything customized.
The application has a crowded community which already created lots of plugins to extend its functionality.
It comes with TinyMCE integrated, which is a great HTML editor, but new ones can be installed with ease.
MODx is also a SEO-friendly CMS with the URLs & meta content it creates.
P.S. The application is not a fresh resource, it is around for more than last 2 years. However, it became more mature & stable with the release of the GA version 1.0. So, you may want to take a look at it again.

MODx is the best CMS experience I have ever had. It’s flexibility is truly amazing and is a relief for web designer / developer. I love it’s logic and freedom that it gives. True CMF (CMF!) king!
modx is an amazing resource. It has helped me grow as a custom web developer tremendously.
The main things (in order):
1. SEO – we’ve got sites that rank #1 for over half of their keywords (in the top 10 in over 75%).
2. Seperation of concerns. Developers can easily create custom functionality and let the designers handle the pieces easily.
3. TVs (custom fields) can be created easily with a web based gui. Once you learn it, anyone can create new custom fields easily.
Modx is very comparable to expression engine but free.

MODx rocks for designers and front-end developers. With MODx you can setup relatively advanced websites with easy to understand principals.
For myself, the most important feature of MODx is “Template Variables” (TVs), which allow you to assign things like textboxes, dropboxes, calendar, images, etc on the backend to make it easy for an end-user to fill out, and then you can format that on the front-end.
There are larger CMS system out there…Drupal and Joomla more robust systems, but really require a PHP programmer. CMS Made Simple is good for static websites. Wordpress is a CMS, but again requires a knowledge of PHP to really unlock it’s potential, or hacks, which make it complicated without explanation to an end-user.
If you like making websites with html/css/javascript then you will love MODx.
I have to comment on this. Finally something about modx.
It is the best CMS/CMF out there.
I just upgraded to 1.0.1 and lit looks amazing.
It looks quite cool and promising too. I’m gonna give it a shot.
Modx blows. Avoid. It’s needlessly complicated and not user-friendly for clients.
I’ve heard a lot about MODx but I haven’t had a chance to give it a go yet. I’ve been using Joomla for so long, and successfully, I just haven’t seen a reason to switch over to a different CMS.
Maybe I’ll try and see if I can get the next smaller project we do to be on a MODx platform, just to give it a shot and learn more about it.
MODx has definitively the best templating system i’ve ever seen.
Easy and straight forward, no php meddling in html markup.
Since you can control whatever you want to show to your client on the manager side, it can be also very user friendly (You cen even rename the managing element so they become more understandable for your customers).
You can also put your existing php program very easily, even without knowing/using the API.
It’s the opposite of more common tools where you have to code for the CMS. MODx works for you, not the other way around.
On the down side, it still lacking support with 3rd party plugins.
So point & click user, or company with no php developpers will probably find it cool but incomplete.
How fast is it compared to Joomla and Drupal?
@Carl,
Not the perfect answer to your question but I think speed is not a concern on any CMS that supports caching.
@hank
I have to disagree with the ease of use for clients. I work with clients in a very specific market that are not tech savvy and we were never able to offer any CMS as part f the sites we developed for them until we discovered ModX. Every client who has been trained on it has been able to easily update and maintain their sites with minimal difficulty.
Plus all the great SEO and development bonuses everyone else has mentioned.
It’s not without it’s flaws, but it is one of the few CMS’s out there that will just let you BUILD A SITE – not a blog, not a store, not a wiki- it’s great for any kind of site that small to medium businesses will need. And any basic site can be easiky converted, so we have actually been able to create additional revenue by upselling it on sites we built years ago.
Documentation is really lacking, though.
I love modx one of the best CMS of all time. I have tired them all and with ease you have a site up and running with mod x. Drupal and Joomla are still using OLD code they haven’t be rewritten from the ground up. Don’t get me wrong impression Drupal and Joomla are powerful but not as easy as modx cms. Plus I can’t wait till Revolution comes out. I encourage any Drupal, Joomla users to switch over and It will make your life much easier. Download it now and mess around with Modx cms
I love MODx http://4up2date.info/modx_facts.html
MODx is a breath of fresh air after using Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress. It is very robust and secure and you can do just about anything you can think of with it without ever hacking the core code.
Unlike the other well-known CMSs, it makes no attempt to force you to do things in a certain way. It merely provides tools for every purpose.
In spite of its power, it lets you create a variety of very simple UIs for naive users, who never have to see the complexity in the back end.
Good CMS… I’am use MOdx for all my project….
