JavaScript Password Strength Meter: chronoStrength
26
Apr
// php the_time('Y') ?>
Previously, a post at WRD was sharing 10 password strength-meter scripts for easily warning users about weak passwords while filling forms.
chronoStrength is a new one which comes as a standalone JavaScript file or a jQuery plugin.
Compared to the standard strength meters which visualize the strength of passwords with colors, this script displays "an estimate of the time for a desktop PC to crack the password".
And, the messages to be displayed can be customized by updating the source code a little which can end up in an original and funny experience.

Excellent! My home Wi-Fi password would take 607 thousand years
My top so far is 238 nonillion years.
Looks like that’s the limit of the script…
Neat script, I wonder how accurate that prediction tool is considering how computing performance has increased.
Figure two over clocked quad core xeon processors would take to crack any code…
haha… one of mine would take 3 minutes. Guess I’ll change that one.
Script writer here,
To answer a few questions:
1) 238 nontillion is the highest you can get on the howsecureisyourpassword.net website, but that’s just because I put a max-length on the textbox. I may remove it at some point.
2) Currently it takes 10,000,000 calculations a second as a benchmark, which is what a Dual Core processor could do. The jQuery plugin lets you set this to whatever you want. I plan to add automatic performance change based on what year it is soon.
About to update the site (jQuery plugin already updated) so that it takes common passwords into account too.
It’s not going to be massively accurate in any case, but I think it’s more helpful than “Weak” or “Strong” as it gives you a sense of the massive security difference between a 6 letter password and a 9 letter password.
A cool tool for every body
yes, it surely is a great tool!
It would take
About 1,609,824 nonillion years
