I heard the Amazon S3 is a great tool to utilize. I have not really expanded out and tried any new cloud hosting tools. I think this might be the first one I try.

@remote access software,

S3 works just like a drive(that can be reached via API) with no capacity limits and no servers are created there.

EC2, yes, it is the service to create servers.

@Nadya,
It is a great application. Thanks for sharing it for free.

@Renato,
There are no extraordinary differences. If you will be using the S3 storage, you must be using their API to upload/update/delete files or if your app. will need extra servers at busy hours, you can create new AMIs automatically via coding.

In my opinion, just running your app. in an Amazon virtual machine wouldn't be counted as an app. running in cloud. It is all about using the advantages of it like unlimited storage, auto-scalable number of servers..

Amazon won't be taking care of the rest, you should be using their API to make your application take the rest :).

Hi Guys,

I would like to know if there is any difference between developing an application for the cloud (Amazon for exemple) and a local app ?
Do I have to customize APIs to access my aplication or I just have to deploy a Virtual Machine (in Amazon) and Amazon take care of the rest?

Thanks a Lot. Very good post!
Best regards,
Renato

Great article! There were some conspicuous omissions IMO, however.
First, you can't talk about cloud storage without mentioning Nirvanix in the same breath.
Also, it may be worthwhile mentioning the commercial service providers that add value to others' clouds, like Right Scale.
BTW, I think you may have meant "Like *EC2*, GoGrid also comes with ready to deploy server images with various configurations (Linux & Windows)."

The Planet offers Cloud Storage and CDN as well.

We also recently ran a report comparing performance with a few of the services included on the list.
