HTML5 Up! is a website that creates and shares very good-looking and free HTML5-CSS3 templates.

All the templates have responsive layouts (down to mobile) (uses Skel.js) and they are compatible with all major browsers.

There are already 10+ templates where new ones are added within time and they can be used freely under the CCA license for both personal or commercial projects.

Boilerplates are usually very handy when starting new web projects as they provide an instant

HTML5 Bones is a boilerplate for HTML5-powered websites including the most-required stuff (normalize.css, html5shiv, etc.) in the markup.

HTML5 Bones

Besides the markup, it is very well commented which works as a useful guide for anyone new into HTML5.

It simply shows the usage of HTML5 markup including header, section, article, footer and more (there is also an example of video as well).

Few weeks ago, EmailCraft, an e-mail/newsletter design and markup service, has contacted me asking whether their service can be reviewed at WRD.

I thought this was a chance to offer another nice freebie to WRD readers and try the service which I was aware of for a long time.

EmailCraft gifted their “Design & Markup” package (priced $178). I was also in need of a newsletter design for a project I was part of (ioDeck) and ordered a design-markup for it.

The brief was simple: “a slick newsletter to share any upcoming features with few screenshots and details”. The output is pretty nice, we’ll be using it regularly and want to share it considering you may want to as well. Here it is (click for full version):

The communication with the EmailCraft team was great and they created 2 different templates to choose from.

I selected the one above and requested few revisions. They were so responsive and quickly replied to the changes I asked for (all the process took only few days).

In the past, I have used PSD to HTML services and this was the first time for an e-mail markup service.

Imho, it makes so much sense as designing newsletters is a pain considering each e-mail client has its own rules and things are much worse compared to crafting HTML-CSS for websites (btw, the template above is compatible with all major e-mail clients/platforms).

P.S. The template is completely free to be used in personal and commercial projects with no attributions. It is only not allowed to redistribute the template.

The default “directory listing” web pages that Apache serve, although making the job, are not so stylish.

Apaxy is a customizable theme for improving these pages with the help of mod_autoindex Apache module and some CSS.

It offers a clean interface with icons for each mime type and makes further improvements possible.

Crowdfunding websites (like Kickstarteror Indiegogo) are the trending and also a great way of funding projects.

Locketron, a project which was rejected by Kickstarter had ran its own crowdfunding campaign and became very successful.

Selfstarter

They have now open sourced their website, named Selfstarter, which was used for the crowdfunding so that anyone can make use of it and run their own campaigns with ease.

It is built with Ruby on Rails and uses Amazon Payments for collecting the funds. However, any other payment providers can also be integrated.

The boilerplate is not a full-featured app, it is just a starting point and still requires custom coding for setting up the authentication, administration and product management.

Almost every application or dynamic website requires a backend to manage it.

These admin screens come bundled with ready-to-use apps (like WordPress, Magento, etc.) but custom apps need custom backends.

It is usually considered as a simple process to create an admin template but, most of the time, this requires a lot of effort as there are lots of things (usually related to usability) to think of.

Designers/developers out there have created various free admin templates and here they are so you don't need to search:

Charisma Admin Template (demo)

Charisma Admin Template

Charisma is a responsive admin template that is built with Twitter Bootstrap.

It has 9 skins and includes almost everything we may need like forms, charts, buttons, tables, file manager, image gallery and much more.

Here is also the GitHub link for the template in case you want to fork it.

INADMIN – jQuery Admin Template (demo)

It also includes a nice sign-in page.

We probably all know About.me, the web-based service for creating simple personal websites.

The Personal Page is a free HTML-CSS template for creating similar websites very quickly.

It is a mobile-friendly (responsive) template which allows inserting a logo, a portrait (as the background) and a short bio.

And, the code is clean, simple and can be updated/improved easily.

The Personal Page

Few weeks ago, RightBanners, a company focused on creating custom banners and landing pages, contacted me asking to review their service.

Besides experiencing the service, I though this was a great chance to provide a handy freebie to WRD readers. I placed an order for a landing page just like any other customer and gone through the whole process. You can find out what working with RightBanners is like and download the landing page they created below.

Free Landing Page

The ordering process was very easy: I wrote the details of the project which was for a non-existing/virtual open source app named Media Presenter (a photo gallery web app).

I simply provided the logo, described the landing page I had in mind with the list of menu items and some of the content. I also shared examples of landing pages I liked so that RightBanners guys can have an idea of my style.

They use a ticketing system which is great. I can contact the RightBanners team and view the correspondence thread any time. The communication process was very smooth. RightBanners team asked for some other details. I added some extra information and they came up with 2 landing page designs the next day.

Free Landing Page

I selected one of them and requested a couple of changes on it. The new screenshot arrived the next day which was pretty fast.

At the end, I was happy with the result, approved the design. RightBanners created the HTML-CSS markup (via their sister service PSD2HTML) and it arrived within 2 days with the PSD source.

Conclusion

I was satisfied with the service, they were always there to reply and things worked pretty fast. I believe that this is their way of working but not because that order was for a review. If you are looking for a landing page or banner design service, you should definitely give them a try.

P.S. The free landing page template can be used in free or commercial websites with no attributions. Only, it can not be distributed without permission.
